The Oscars took place at the Dolby Theatre, Hollywood, California on Sunday, March 4, 2018. The prestigious annual ceremony hosted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences kicked off with a star-studded red carpet and then went on to display marvelous and splendid performances and gimmicks by talented celebrities. The Oscar is considered as the highest honor to receive in recognition for one’s work on and off the screen by those in the entertainment industry. The Oscars include various categories such as best picture, best director, best actor, best actress, best cinematography etc. The event was hosted by the late night talk show host “Jimmy Kimmel” for the second consecutive year, enabling him to become the first person to hold back to back ceremonies after Billy Crystal in 1997.
The talking points of Oscars 2018 include Frances Mc.Dormand’s acceptance speech for the “Best Actress”. Her emotional speech took the place of one of the most powerful displays on stage at the Oscars when she asked all the women nominated for different categories to stand up, signifying that women’s minds are extremely capable of generating and executing brilliant ideas. Her speech was undoubtedly the most rousing feminist moment of the night indicating women empowerment. In addition, she also endorsed an influential proposal that would help make talented but underrepresented individuals commonplace in Hollywood by mentioning the term “inclusion rider”.
Ryan Seacrest interviewing celebrities on the red carpet can also be included in one of the tense moments of the night. This is due to the fact that Ryan Seacrest’s former personal stylist accused him of sexual harassment before the Oscars, leading the audience to believe that Ryan may face some awkward comments or questions or would not end up hosting the red carpet altogether. Though no such awkward confrontations were seen between the host and the celebrities, the thirty-second tape delay between filming and broadcasting did make the viewers’ suspicious.
Nomination of the movie “Get Out” also became a hot topic owing to the fact that only a handful of horror movies have ever been nominated for the Oscars and fewer have succeeded in taking home gold. The movie winning the award for “Best Original Screenplay” was no less than a feat in itself for the writers of the amazing movie signifying that Hollywood has accepted if not embraced diversity. Jordan Peele became the fifth black filmmaker to be nominated for best director as well as the first black filmmaker to receive nominations for producing, directing and writing in the same year. Because of his win, he also became the first black screenwriter to win recognition in the category of the best original screenplay.
The show received a mixed reception from the media publications with critics speculating on the ceremony as well as Jimmy Kimmel’s hosting. While the show came off as low key to most of the audience, it no doubt had bits of the funny moments that most people tune into The Oscars for year after year.
